Place dates in saucepan and cover with water - and bring to a boil. Reduce to simmer and let cook 3 minutes - add baking soda. Let cool - drain BUT reserve 1 cup of liquid.
Cream butter and sugar - then beat in eggs one at a time. Mix in flour, sugar, vanilla and combine - then add baking powder and reserved liquid. Add dates and stir to combine.
Bake 30 - 40 minutes - until top is golden brown
Top with caramel sauce while still warm.
