The tradition of the New England clambake existed even before New England itself was born. Clambakes reveal the nature of true New Englanders, demanding hard work, persistence, and appreciation of native seafood. The Day family of Prudence Island, located in Rhode Island's Narragansett Bay, has been clambaking for decades. Nearly 30 years ago, Yankee sought them out to document their annual clambake, and the family is still going strong, with an annual gathering of more than 150 family and friends. These images capture a portion of the vigor and passion with which the Days gather loved ones and share a delicious feast. Photos by Erik Rank.
Here are Yankee’s tips for hosting your own clambake.
