The Black Dog Tavern was founded in 1971 by Captain Robert Douglas, who wanted a place where locals could go and share a meal, year round. But first, it began with some dreams. Captain Douglas, originally from Chicago, came to the Vineyard at a young age and knew he wanted to come back. He also knew that he wanted to build a ship. And lastly, the Captain wanted a dog by his side.

First came the ship, a 151 foot topsail schooner called the Shenandoah. Next came a black Lab-Boxer mix named “The Black Dog” after the character in Robert Lewis Stevenson’s “Treasure Island.” And on New Year’s Day in 1971, Captain Douglas, with his faithful companion by his side, opened the doors to “The Black Dog” and the Captain’s home in Vineyard Haven was complete.

Named for his Douglas’ trustful companion, the Black Dog is now famous for its delicious fare. Try the quahog chowder, deep-fried oysters and, from its brunch menu, the Scooby Snack (poached eggs on an English muffin with ham tomato & cheddar cheese) and the Shaggy Attack (two poached eggs with avocado, tomato & cheese on an English muffin with hollandaise sauce). While you eat, gaze out at Vineyard Haven Harbor and relax as you enjoy the view. Check out the new outside patio area located right on the beach. The Black Dog serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner, so you can stop in all day and find something on the menu that you will love. The Black Dog is also well known for its souvenir T-shirts featuring its logo of the black dog and have expanded to sell other products with the same logo. Besides selling apparel for men, women, and children, the Black Dog also sells dog products, accessories, housewares, gourmet food, and bakery products. Located at 20 Beach Street Extension, Vineyard Haven, MA. Phone: 508-693-9223.
