The “Mariner” pewter oil lamp ($180) is designed with a stable base in the shape of a ship’s decanter.

–Yankee Magazine, January/February 2011

Back in the 1970s, Vermont was a mecca for young craftspeople. Two of the most successful were Fred and Judi Danforth, who launched Danforth Pewterers more than 30 years ago. Fred had the weight of history behind him: His Colonial forebears were pewterers in the 18th century, the craft’s golden age in America. The store was recently relocated to a handsome workshop and showroom in Middlebury, where Fred, Judi, and their staff create bowls, plates, vases, oil lamps, jewelry, and other items from the ancient alloy. Visitors can watch the artisans at work Monday through Saturday and are invited to try hand-finishing pewter spoons cast in a 200-year-old mold. (You can buy your spoon, or simply admire your craftsmanship.)
