Four Seas Ice Cream
Centerville, MA 02632
Four Seas Ice Cream on Cape Cod has been serving the finest homemade ice cream since 1934, founded by W. Wells Watson. It’s one of the three oldest ice cream shops in New England and was once a blacksmith shop back in the day. The store was named for part of a poem by Mable E. Phinney called “Cape Cod Calls.” The line reads: “We face four seas,” our slogan runs Four seas of azure blue…” The four seas refers to the four bodies of water surrounding the Cape: Atlantic Ocean, Buzzards Bay, Cape Cod Bay, and Nantucket Sound. Located just a quarter-mile from one of Cape Cod’s most beautiful beaches, generations of summer visitors and local residents have come here with their families for frosty treats and homemade sandwiches, like their lobster salad sandwich. Named one of the top ten ice creams in the country by more than one national publications, Four Seas Ice Cream has garnered many national and local awards. In 2011, Food and Drink Magazine named the company number sixteen in their top 25 ice cream stories. Come on down and grab a seat on one of their stools, at the counter, or at a dining room table. Enjoy the old-fashioned ice cream sodas, frappes (the New England word for “milkshake”), and ice cream flavors like ginger, penuche pecan, cookie do, fresh peach, and black raspberry.
Four bodies of water (hence the “Seas” in its name) may surround the Cape, but hundreds and hundreds of human bodies descend on this place daily for the Cape’s best ice cream. No wonder: it’s made fresh daily with the choicest ingredients and ripest seasonal fruit. Get the beach plum when it’s offered; it won’t come again until next summer. Seize the fleeting moment, temporarily abandoning the waistline. ($) Open year round Wed.-Sun. 11-5.
