Today, as a nonprofit educational and charitable trust administered by a nonpaid board of trustees,
it’s the oldest operating inn in America. If you haven’t been there, well, you must go. Stop by the old-fashioned grist mill across the road, too. It still grinds wheat, corn, and rye for the inn’s restaurant and gift shop.
Longfellow’s Wayside Inn, now a National Historic Site, is open for meals and lodging year-round (except Christmas and July 4).

Best Historic Lodging
Wayfarers have lodged at this former stagecoach inn and tavern for nearly 300 years, and it was the centerpiece of historic buildings that Henry Ford once envisioned as a museum of Early American life. Nine modernized guestrooms, upstairs from the busy restaurant, remain pleasantly genteel, though some are small.
