Exhibits honor a legacy of innovation by the twin brothers who were pioneers of New England industry.
–Yankee Magazine, January/February 2012

Best Place To Let Off Steam
Kingfield’s famous native sons, twin brothers Francis Edgar and Freelan Oscar Stanley, perfected the photographic dry-plate process and achieved numerous other feats in addition to building the Stanley Steamer automobile.

The curious history of the Stanley Steamer automobile is told well here, right in the town that was once home to the remarkable Stanley twins. See the cars that first broke the two-miles-per-minute mark, plus outstanding images of rural life c. 1900 captured by their talented sister, all part of the documentary photography collection.
