–Yankee Magazine, May/June 2012

One of the state’s best tourist lures, founded by Vrest Orton, and the mother of all country stores.

Yankee Magazine April 2006

In 1946, Vrest Orton came up with the idea of an emporium stocked with useful household items. Today, the business is a vast trove of sturdy apparel, kitchenware, hard-to-find practical gadgets, Vermont cheddar, and penny candy. Mind-boggling and jam-packed, it’s the ultimate general store.

Yankee Magazine April 2005

Vrest Orton’s homage to the general stores of yesteryear remains true to his vision of offering practical merchandise–Vermont Cheddar, sturdy kitchenware, classic country clothing–with a healthy dose of nostalgia in the form of penny candy and a pot-bellied stove. There’s also a branch in Rockingham.

Yankee Magazine April 2004

More than half a century ago, writer Vrest Orton had a vision: Create an emporium modeled on the country stores of his Vermont youth, stocked with useful items instead of tacky souvenirs. Today the business is a vast trove of sturdy apparel and housewares, stone-ground cereals, cheddar cheese and other Vermont delicacies, gadgets, and legendary “penny” candy. There’s also a branch in Rockingham; much of the inventory is represented in a plump mail-order catalog.

In 1946, Vrest Orton came up with the idea of a general store dedicated to carrying useful handy household items. Son Lyman Orton has hewed close to that theme, updated and expanded into four rambling buildings filled with hard-to-find practical gadgets, old-fashioned favorites and you name it. Mind-boggling and jam-packed, it’s the ultimate general store. Open Mon-Sat. 9-5. WA. Or visit the store’s second location in Rockingham (Rte. 103; 802-463-2224). Open daily Mon.-Sat. 9-5, Sun. 10-5.
