By car to Burlington, VT:
  • From Boston: Take I-93 North up through Massachusetts into New Hampshire. In Concord, take I-89 North to Burlington, VT. Get off at either Exit 14E or Exit 14W, depending on your destination once in the city (14W will take you to the downtown area).
  • From the New York Metro Area (via New York State): Take the New York Thruway (I-87) North to Exit 24 (Albany). After the tollbooth, bear right and continue on the Northway (Montreal North 87) to Exit 20 (Fort Ann). Follow signs for Rte. 149 East. Proceed on Rte. 149 East to Fort Ann. In Fort Ann, pick up Rte. 4 East. Proceed on Rte. 4 East to Vermont. Once in Vermont, take Exit 2 off Rte. 4 (Vergennes-Fair Haven) and proceed north on Rte. 22A to Vergennes. Take Rte. 7 North and follow into Burlington.
  • From the New York Metro Area (via Connecticut and Massachusetts): Take I-95 East through New York State into Connecticut. When you reach New Haven, CT, take I-91 North, which will take you through Massachusetts and into Vermont. In White River Junction, VT, take I-89 North and follow it for 90 miles to Burlington. Get off at Exit 14E or 14W, depending on your destination once in the city (14W will take you to the downtown area).

Lake Champlain ferry crossings from New York State: In addition to the directions outlined above, three ferries (one year-round, two seasonal) serve the region. Call Lake Champlain Transportation for a current schedule and fares at 802-864-9804.

  • Plattsburgh, NY, to Grand Isle, VT: Open year-round.
  • Port Kent, NY, to Burlington, VT: Runs late spring to early fall.
  • Essex, NY, to Charlotte, VT: Runs late spring to late fall.

By rail: Amtrak offers service to the Burlington, VT, area. For rates and times, contact Amtrak at 800-872-7245 (800-USA-RAIL). Or visit them on the Web: http://www.amtrak.comg

By air: Visitors can also fly into Burlington International Airport, located just three miles east of the city.
