THE CHARM OF THE Lake Champlain Valley begins with its location. Clinging to the shores of North America's sixth-largest lake, with the Adirondack Mountains at its doorstep, the area packs a punch for those looking to explore northern New England's outdoor life -- regardless of the season. At the same time, though the region may be North Woods, it certainly isn't backwoods. Its capital -- and, in a sense, Vermont's capital, too -- the city of Burlington, offers a hip, international flair that is in part an import from its Canadian neighbor to the north, Montreal.

Winter brings the snow and a blizzard of activity to the region. Skiers come for the challenging twists and turns -- and also for the sights. Take your pick. There's Smuggler's Notch, Sugarbush Resort, and the 4,000-foot-tall Jay Peak, home to more than 500 feet of snow annually and to views that stretch across two countries. For nonskiers, Burlington puts its stamp on Mardi Gras and plays host to the annual Winter Festival.

In summer Burlington and the surrounding area bloom. Head over to the Adirondacks or Vermont's Green Mountains for hiking, or stay in town and explore Champlain's shores on eight miles of Burlington real estate that cut along the city's waterfront. Just looking to lounge? North Beach is only a few minutes drive from the downtown. And don't forget about the ice cream -- this is where Ben & Jerry's got its start.

Shopping is a 12-month activity here. Your best bet for one-stop shopping is Burlington's Church Street Marketplace -- it keeps you in town while offering more than 100 retail shops, restaurants, and street vendors. If you're after a smaller scale experience, don't worry -- this is Vermont, the region's got that, too.
