Annie – it would help if you gave the exact measure for the baking powder. I couldn’t tell from the video how much to use and thought it was 2 tsp. I’m glad I looked at your printed recipe. I look forward to making several of these soda breads.

My recipe for Irish Soda Bread differs sightly, however, with raisins the Scottish name, I thought was Spotted Dick.

What a great recipe. The bread tasted just like the those I had as a kid. When adding raisins isn’t the bread known as ‘Spotted Dick’?

I’m going to have to try your recipe. It seems a lot simpler than some. Your video was great!

My mother always made Irish soda bread when we were growing up in MA and it was a great favorite of ours. I have used her recipe over the years but last year, in a pinch on St. Patrick’s Day, couldn’t find any here in Texas. Imagine our shock, surprise, and disappointment. This year I’ll be prepared to make my Mom’s recipe as well as Annie’s for Irish soda bread. Can’t wait!

No Irish Soda Bread I’ve ever tasted was like Spotted Dick–Spotted Dick is English, you know. It is 2 oz flour, 1 tsp baking powder, 1/2 teaspoon allspice, 2 oz shredded suet, 1 oz sugar, 4 oz currants (or raisins), 2 oz fresh breadcrumbs, 1 egg, and 4-5 tbsp milk–mash it all together and steam it for a couple of hours (covered)–plop it out over a custard, wear your best orange outfit and enjoy it for desert any day of the year EXCEPT St Paddy’s Day!! ;)
