Yield: Makes 4-5 dozen squares.

Chock-full of goodness, these make a healthy dessert or afternoon snack for children.

  • 8 ounces cream cheese
  • 4 ounces butter, melted
  • 4 ounces margarine, melted
  • 1 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1 cup unbleached white flour
  • 8 apples
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 3 tablespoons honey
  • 1 egg, beaten

Mix cream cheese, butter, margarine, whole wheat flour, and unbleached flour until dough is an even consistency. Refrigerate for 2 hours. Peel apples and shred on a coarse grater. Cut dough in half. Roll out half on a whole wheat flour-covered board to fit an 18x12-inch baking sheet. Grease the pan and line with the dough. Spread the apples evenly on the dough. Sprinkle with cinnamon and cover uniformly with honey. Roll out the other half of the dough and place over the top of the apple mixture. Score with a fork. Brush with egg wash and bake at 375 degrees F for 40 to 45 minutes.
